It loosely reminded me of Georgette Heyer's Arabella, an all time fave. Set aside it's quick pace, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Towards the middle I had hopes that he was finally getting his moment, but no. She would rather read than sleep and though all her novels take place in the past. Good English families all have a house in the country with a deer park, a trout stream, and an army of gardeners. He was such an interesting character, but we didn't really get to know much of him. Having said that, I do think that the story could have benefited by expanding a few other points in the story, especially when it came to Sophie's father. One that might not have been as light and funny.
Now I realize that expanding on the beginning would have made for a different story.
The story unfolded quite quickly in the beginning, which initially kind of disappointed me. She knows her place in the family and is quite content to embrace it so when things go better than expected she is adorably gracious. It was sweet, humorous and just what I needed in between more serious books.
